It is a diurnal animal, living in colonies of individual burrows in pastures or grassy embankments. The squirrels emerge during the day to feed upon seeds, plant shoots and roots or flightless invertebrates. The colonies maintain sentinels who whistle at the sight of a predator, Class: Mammalia.

It has a lighter underside. Its head, face, front paws and chest are a coppery red. - NatureWorks. The social interactions of golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) observed during a 2-year study in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta under natural conditions are described and Author: Jean Ferron.

The scientific name for Golden-mantled ground squirrels is “Spermophilus lateralis”, the first word being Greek for “seed loving”. Like other squirrels, these squirrels dig in the ground to hide their food to eat later.

The Golden-mantled ground squirrel cleans its fur by rolling in the dust, then combing itself using its teeth and claws.

Of all our ground squirrels the Golden-mantled is the most brilliantly colored. This rather bookish name for the animal is a translation of the scientific name of the species, chrysodeirus; the more commonplace appellations locally employed, "Copperhead" or "Yellow-headed Chipmunk," serve just as well to set forth the conspicuous feature of coloration.

Golden-mantled ground squirrels probably affect predator populations and reproduction, depending upon how heavily any predator species relies on S. lateralis as a food source.

Spermophilus lateralis may also regulate populations of birds, lizards, and other small mammals upon which it preys. The Cascade golden-mantled ground squirrel (Spermophilus saturatus) is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae, in the order Rodentia. It is the largest species of the three within the subgenus Callospermophilus.

It is found in the Cascade Mountains in the province of British Columbia, Canada and the state of Washington, United : Mammalia. The Golden-mantled ground squirrel (Spermophilis lateralis) breaths continuously during euthermia and episodically during hibernation.

How and why this conversion occurs is unknown. Breathing is continuously shaped into a precise pattern which appropriately matches ventilation to metabolic demands. In all mammals, sensory inputs from pulmonary mechanoreceptors (carried in the vagus .
